History.

The history of the Airport of Barnaul dates back to October 27, 1937. On that day, in the capital of the recently formed Altai District, an aviation sub-unit was set up. The current airport complex (artificial runway, taxiways, apron, hotel and technical service premises) was put into commission in March of 1967. In 1995, the Airport of Barnaul officially became an international airport. The unique geographic location of the Airport of Barnaul has made it possible for it to become one of the major aviation enterprises of the West-Siberian Region. It services routes connecting the Russian regions as well multiple international destinations. Nowadays the Airport of Barnaul is the key distribution center of passenger and cargo flights in the Altai District.

Today.

Currently, the airport is preparing for modernization and reconstruction. The construction of the arrival lounge for passengers of domestic airlines has been completed. The airport is moving quickly ahead with plans to renovate their service and maintenance equipment. New boarding ramps have been purchased and the old ones have been updated, allowing for the service of virtually any type of airplane. Autonomous ground power supply devices have been bought and the fleet of specialized service vehicles is being constantly updated. 300,000 made use of the airport’s services in 2007 (passenger traffic grew by 14 % during the year). Additionally, 2,900 tons of cargo passed through the airport in 2007 (cargo traffic increased by 16% during the year).

Future.

A program for development of the airport over the next 15 years is currently in progress. It will include reconstruction of the air terminal, the international sector, the hotel and on-board food plant. There are also plans to build a cargo terminal and to update the airport landscaping. The total investment in airport development from 2008-2012 will be $24 million.
