History.

The Tomsk Airport is an aviation enterprise that is inseparably linked with the history of the city of Tomsk. The formation of the Tomsk District created a great demand for air transport to connect the district center, Tomsk, with Russian cities and nearby international locations. In November 1967, a new airport was built and put into commission in Tomsk.

Today.

The Tomsk airport is a major vessel for passenger and cargo transportation within the Russian Federation. 300,000 people passed through the Airport of Tomsk in 2006 (passenger traffic grew by 19% during the year). Furthermore, 2,000 tons of cargos went through the airport (cargo traffic increased by 48% during the year). In the next 7 years, passenger traffic is expected to grow by 250%, servicing over 650,000 people a year.

Future.

By 2009, the runway and the taxiways will be reconstructed and construction will begin on a new 7-story building to house the airport’s navigation services. Plans also include the creation of office space and a new hotel. Additionally, a new international terminal is in the works, servicing Kazakhstan, China, Thailand, Turkey and Central Asia. Work on the cargo and passenger terminals should be completed by 2011, as should the hangar for business aviation. The final phase of the reconstruction will include the building of a new 3.2 kilometer runway, which will enable the airport to accept and service virtually any size aircraft. From 2008-2016, $62 million will be invested in the airport’s modernization.
