History.

The airport was built in 1932. In the early 1930s, the squadron of Chita served the gold-mining and mining enterprises as well as the geologists and hunters in the north of Buryatia and throughout the Chita District. Regular passenger flights began in 1934 when the Moscow – Chita – Vladivostok motorway was opened. By the 1960’s almost all regional centers and major population aggregates had air communication with Chita. Flights took passengers to and from Moscow, Leningrad, Vladivostok, Yakutsk, Alma Ata and other capitals of Soviet republics. Many health resorts were located in this district as well. The Airport of Chita is in the middle of the shortest route connecting southeast Asia with Europe and America. The advantageous geographic position of the Airport of Chita is one of the main reasons for the large-scale reconstruction that began in 1993. In the mid-1990s, a new runway meeting the international ICAO requirements was put into commission and the reconstruction of the international air terminal was finished. The airport was then officially designated an “international airport.”

Today.

In 2007, 140,000 passengers passed through the Airport of Chita (the passenger traffic grew by 12%). 1,700 tons of cargos were sent through the airport (70% more than in 2006). In the spring of 2008, a new domestic terminal was put into use and new safety equipment was installed.

Future.

According to the Development Program of the Airport of Chita, a cargo terminal, hotel, VIP lounge and new fuelling complex are in the works. From 2008-2012, $15 million will be invested in the airport’s renovation.
